AUBURN – Although most of the major preseason football polls for 2011 have yet to appear, early indications are that the national champion Auburn Tigers aren’t expected to mount much of a defense.
With Auburn set to begin fall practice today, most of the early projections find the Tigers picked to finish fifth in the SEC West, and near the bottom of the national top 25, if ranked at all.
That makes the Tigers, well, “defensive.”
“Yeah, that’s kind of been the mentality at Auburn for the last couple years because every year we come into it and we’re expected to fail and not to get to where we want, so we’ve embraced the role of playing with a chip on our shoulder game-in, game-out,” said Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen. “I think you saw a lot of that last year too. We didn’t really get credit until we were 9-0. We’re just going in there and we’re going to try and prove everyone wrong.”
